Juniperus communis — Common Juniper
An increasingly rare native tree, frequently planted in its fastigiate forms.
All leaves are juvenile, in groups of three, with a single white band in the inside of the needle. Berries ripen purple-black after three years (and provide the traditional flavouring for gin).
‘Stricta’ (Irish Juniper) is the narrow fastigiate cultivar most commonly seen in gardens.
